The Story behind the Alfega Wines

I suppose the story begins hundreds of years ago, when the Greek alphabet was first created. The name “Alfega” comes from combining the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet: Alpha and Omega. While the name has a nice ring, this wine perfectly represents our work at Domaine Hatzimichalis - a wine that came together from start to finish all within the confines of our vineyards and winery. From viticulture and pruning to winemaking and distributing, all the procedures are run and handled by Domaine Hatzimichalis. Truth be told, all of our wines come together this way, but it is fun to have a group of wines dedicated to our processes.

Beyond the name, however, there is a unique feature about each of these wines: Alfega Lefkos (White), Alfega Rosé, and Alfega Erythros (Red).

Alfega Lefkos is a wine whose popularity has increased worldwide in recent years, as international appreciation for Greek wines has also risen. This wine is a blend of Malagousia, Sauvignon Blanc, and Robola. Malagousia and Robola are two indigenous Greek varieties, with Domaine Hatzimichalis being the only winery in mainland Greece that grows Robola.

Alfega Rosé is a real treat with its subtle sweetness. It perfectly encapsulates a Greek summer – laying on the beach, sipping your wine while tanning. This wine is a blend of Grenache Rouge, Syrah, and Malagousia. However, what makes this rosé particularly unique is its color – a deep rose color - almost like a rose flower. To let you in on a secret, giving a rosé wine its color is a very quick operation. Simply put, the skin of the red grapes sits in a tank along with the inside of the grape, soaking in the tank for just a few hours to give the wine its color. We believe that those extra couple of hours we give our rosé make all the difference – intensifying the flavor without adding bitterness.

Alfega Erythros is a classic Bordeaux blend. Truth be told, not too many wineries outside of Bordeaux take the chance of competing with their classic red wine blend. And while we consider ours to be a true contender, what really separates our Alfega blend from a Bordeaux blend is the price. Our blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot is a wine that you can purchase as an everyday wine at its practical price.

We hope you enjoyed a little insight into our Alfega wine collection. If you’re planning on trying one in the near future, be sure to tag us on Instagram @domainehatzimichalis with your picture! Cheers!
